Evolution of the WR Table

This table outlines the WRs as of January 1, 2007 and January 1, 2008. Under each stage, data indicates how many seconds were cut off of a given level (all difficulties combined) as well as the number of WRs that were set on this stage (untieds and ties. Multiple untieds in a row in the same day count as distinct WRs). In each cell is the old WR and the number of players with this WR in parenthesis, and under it the new WR and similar data in parenthesis. All untied records are highlighted in gold. The final column indicates how much time was cut from each difficulty, and how many WRs were set on each difficulty, as well as a total (which hopefully matches my data above!).

2007 POY: David Clemens

We truly have been blessed at the-elite.net the previous two years. The Goldeneye Elite has seen many ups and downs - periods of domination, periods of rivalry, periods of intense activity, and lulls without anything to watch from an outsiders point of view. However, a resurgance of activity among new players and old has sparked a new era in GE Speedrunning competition. For the second year in a row, we witness a fierce battle between a verteran and an "amatuer," and we have entered and era of both rivalry and dominance amongst the top of the rankings.

I do not wish to go into the specific WR accomplishments of any player in this writeup. There are 12 other pages and loads of data available about who did what and when. I believe this years true theme is best to look back upon and realize the accomplishments as a whole. I do not wish to neglect any players from this writeup. While Bryan and David may have been the two hottest topics of the year, players across the board made tremendous leaps, hit incredible WRs and either made names for themselves or strengthened their reputation as top speedruners at the-elite. As I am trying to avoid specific mentions, I am going to cut to the chase. The data and voting all pointed to two players. To all the rest, congratulations on a great year, and I'm sure you have mentions in the monthly writups!

Bryan Bosshardt arguably had the strongest WRs this year. Already at the top of the rankings to start 2007, Bryan had nowhere to go but down. With a surge of activity below him from Ryan White and Ilari Pekkala in 2006, Bryan knew he had to play hard to keep everybody off of his heels. Of Bryans impressive 44 WRs, 16 were untied. What is most impressive about these WRs, is that he *already* had them all. There were no gimmes, and certainly Bryan's year was no walk in the park. He was active for the majority of the year, picking up 5 POMs and 2 POQs.

While Bryan was not overshadowed in 2007, he never seemed to be the "top story" on the forums, even when he may have deserved to be. This was because the biggest story of the year was David Clemens. Our Player of the Year had more WRs than Bryan, and seemed to pump them out at will. David Clemens started the year with 2 WRs, having burst onto the scene just before January rolled around. Having made a name for himself before the year began, it was easy for him to steal the show, from January 1st until December 31st. David Clemens set 49 WRs, and ended with a total of 34 when all was said and done. That data alone means he was hitting them across the board, not just hanging around on a few stages as they continually got pummeled to the ground. David's all around ability shined, as during periods of high activity, he seemed to bust out a WR a day, something even the top historical performers cannot claim to have done with such ease.

To decide between whose accomplishment was greater is a very difficult decision. Both players achieved many of the same WRs, nearly the same volume, and ended up very close in the rankings. The decision this year, as every year, was done in voting. The official results were practically too close to call, but a decision must be made, and a good decision was made. Bryan Bosshardt had some of the best WRs the-elite has ever seen this year, and has a perennial powerhouse at the-elite (he has recently tied Wouter Jansen in Player Of.. Rankings). David Clemens, however, has compressed the same power and accomplishment into a single year. This achievement must simply be recognized as THE player of the year. As our current (mid 2008) champion in all categories, it is only fitting that in the year he hit the scene and rose to the top, he was crowned as Player of the Year, 2007.
